Gift cards

Redeem a gift card code on the Billing tab to turn it into credits straight away, and tell gift cards apart from coupon codes.

A gift card is a code that turns into credits on your balance. You redeem it on the Billing tab, and the credits are there immediately — there is nothing to activate and no order to attach it to.

Before you start

  • You need the code. It looks something like GFT4K9QX and is between 4 and 39 characters.
  • Gift cards are often bought by someone else, so the code may arrive by email or on a card rather than being listed on your account.

Steps

Open the Billing tab

Select Settings in the top bar, then Billing — or select your balance in the top bar. The Redeem a gift card panel sits on the right of your balance: Gift cards turn into credits on your balance right away. Coupon codes are different — those apply at checkout.

Enter the code

Type the code into Gift card code. It is shown in capitals as you type, and capitals or lower case do not matter. Redeem stays grey until you have typed something (Enter a gift card code first).

Select Redeem

The button reads Redeeming... for a moment. Then the toast Gift card redeemed appears, the field clears, and your balance goes up by the value of the card — on the page and in the top bar.

If the code is not accepted, a toast titled Could not redeem this gift card appears with the reason. See the table below.

Gift cards and coupons are not the same thing

Gift card Coupon
Where you enter it Settings → Billing, Redeem a gift card The order’s Pay step, Have a coupon code?
What it gives you Credits on your balance A discount on the dollar amount of one order
When it works Any time, before or after an order Only while an order is at the Pay step with an amount still due
Can it be used more than once No — it is turned into credits once No — one coupon, one order

Because the two are easy to mix up, the portal says so when you use the wrong box:

  • A coupon entered under Redeem a gift card is refused with This is a coupon code, not a gift card. Apply it at checkout to discount an order.
  • A gift card entered at checkout is refused with This is a gift card code. Redeem it on your billing page to top up your account balance.

Neither attempt uses the code up. Enter it in the right place and it still works.

Why a code can be refused

Message What it means
Invalid gift card code The code does not exist, is shorter than 4 or longer than 39 characters, or it was issued to another account. The message is deliberately vague so codes cannot be guessed, so start by checking the spelling.
This code is expired The card is past its expiry date.
This code has been redeemed The credits from this card are already on an account.
This is a coupon code, not a gift card. Apply it at checkout to discount an order. It is a coupon. See Coupons.
This gift card carries no value The card has no amount on it. Write to support@tucia.com with the code and we will look at it.

What happens next

  • The credits are on your balance right away and can be spent on your next order. Like all credits, they do not expire. A card’s value is turned into credits at US$8.00 per credit, so a US$80 card gives 10 credits.
  • The card appears in your Coupons and gift cards table as Used.
  • A line is added to Billing history: description Gift card redeemed, method Gift card, and the credits with a plus sign, for example +10. There is no receipt for a redemption, because no money changed hands on your account.
  • Selecting Redeem twice cannot credit you twice — the second attempt is refused with This code has been redeemed.
