Account balance
Where your credits are shown, how checkout always spends them first, and what happens when the balance does not cover an order.
Your account balance is the pool of credits on your account. Every order you place is paid from it first, automatically; only what the balance does not cover is paid online. This page explains the Billing tab and the rows you see when you pay for an order.
The Billing tab
Select Settings in the top bar and then Billing — or simply select the balance in the top bar, for example 16 credits. The page is headed Balance:
Account balance, then the number of credits in large type with its dollar value beside it, for example16 credits ≈ US$128.00. The dollar figure is what the credits are worth at US$8.00 each.- The line
A credit is the pricing unit for our editing work. One credit is US$8.00, and larger packages come at a discount. - Buy credits. See Buy credits.
On the right is the Redeem a gift card panel, and below everything the Coupons and gift cards table. Those are covered in Gift cards and Coupons. Your past top-ups are on the next tab, Billing history.
Credits are always used first
The balance is not one payment method among several. On the Pay step of an order, your credits are applied first, and only what is left over becomes an amount in US dollars:
- If your credits cover the whole order, Total Due is
US$0.00and you place the order with Complete Purchase. - If they do not, the shortfall is priced at US$8.00 per credit and paid online, with PayPal or a card, on the same page.
Two consequences are worth knowing before you plan a large order:
- You cannot keep your credits and pay in cash instead. There is no option to skip the balance.
- A coupon never reduces credits. It only reduces the dollar amount left after your balance, so when your credits cover the order there is no coupon field at all. See Coupons.
| Code | Value | What you get | Expires | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPRING10Coupon | US$10 | US$10 OFF new order | Dec 31, 2026 | Available |
Nothing to pay online — this order uses your account balance.
Paid online, after your balance and coupon. This is the real amount.
The rows on the Pay step
When you have credits on your account, the Order summary on the Pay step adds these rows:
| Row | What it means |
|---|---|
Initial charge |
What this order costs in credits — Before your balance and any coupon. |
Account balance |
The credits you have right now — Available now — spent first. |
Subtotal |
Only when there is a shortfall: the credits your balance does not cover, and what they cost in dollars — What is left after your balance, at US$8.00 per credit. |
Discount |
Only when a coupon is applied. |
On the right, Total Due is the real amount you pay online, in US dollars, after your balance and any coupon. It reads either Nothing to pay online — this order uses your account balance. or Paid online, after your balance and coupon. This is the real amount.
When your balance does not cover the order
You pay the rest on the same page. The Payment section says, for example, We will use your 16 credits balance first. The remaining US$32.00 needs to be paid online. and offers Pay US$32.00 with PayPal and Pay US$32.00 with card. Either button takes you to PayPal’s or Stripe’s own secure page; when you come back, the order is placed and your balance has been used. See Review and pay.
If you would rather top up first, buy credits and come back: when your balance now covers the order, the page tells you Your balance now covers this order and offers Complete Purchase instead.
Team members and the balance
Team members spend the same studio balance. A member whose Can pay with balance switch is on can place an order the balance covers. Members cannot pay online: if the balance falls short, their checkout reads Insufficient balance. Please contact your account owner to top up.
Rules and limits
